Afterlife: a My Chemical Romance Zine explores the influences and contexts surrounding The Black Parade.  Rather than focusing on personal essays, we are seeking to create a collection of analyses that bring together the aesthetic, thematic, musical, and literary sensibilities of the era.Given the operatic nature of The Black Parade, we are looking for essays that are willing to dive deep, and art that is in conversation with the thematic vocabulary of the album. We would love for you to mediate, evaluate, and analyze the various album influences.Our ultimate goal is to crystallize the atmosphere around the album in order to alchemize its affective legacy.

What do you mean by "Affective legacy"?

Affect describes the thoughts, bodily sensations, and other signals which shape our experiences and culture by using feeling to influence actions, emotions, and social relationships. Affects are unconsciously communicated whenever we interact, but can also be consciously communicated. We see this in books, theatrical performance, works of art, and more.When we speak of analyzing an "affective legacy," we are asking what My Chemical Romance chose to communicate, how they did it, and what was the ultimate result on the audience at large.

001. i'm nervous to apply because i have little experience in this style of writing. Can you expand on the editing process?

Please apply anyway! If you have an idea that you're very interested in, we want to hear about it. That being said, we are very aware that this is not a particularly common approach at fanzines, so to ease the process we have appointed an editing team on our moderators. Their job will be making sure your piece is clear and salient. Further, we encourage you to fill out our interest check! We will be reviewing any concerns raised there, in the hopes of crafting an application that adequately addresses them.

002. how will contributors be compensated?

As artists and writers ourselves, we deeply understand the importance of being properly compensated for your work. As such this zine is FOR PROFIT with a split-profit model. What this means is that should the zine recoup all production costs, the remaining profit will be divided amongst the mod team and contributors.Otherwise, all contributors are entitled to the below:
